Critical planning flags

A handful of facts drive every booking below. Read these before the day-by-day section, because they change which days you lock in.

Beijing — natural outdoor ice rinks at Shichahai, Beihai and Houhai only open when ice is thick enough and cold holds, historically arriving anywhere from late Dec to mid-Jan (warm winters as late as Jan 17). Do not plan around them for Dec 19–20; use the year-round indoor Ice Ribbon. The Blue Harbor Light Festival is the reliable December evening event. source
Chongli — the 2026–27 season price tables were not yet published at research time; figures below use 2025–26 peak-winter proxies and sit in italics. Wanlong's kids winter camp session 27-3期 runs Dec 20–25, overlapping the trip. source

Tokyo — Miraikan is only open Dec 25–27 in this window, closed Dec 28–Jan 1 plus Tuesdays. teamLab Planets December tickets go on sale late September. Ghibli Museum is advance-only with a winter-closure risk. The Odaiba Unicorn Gundam statue was removed (the store stays open). Sony ExploraScience is permanently closed. Roppongi Keyakizaka lights end Dec 25. Most museums close Dec 29–Jan 1. source teamLab Gundam Base
03 · The days

Day by day

Each day offers two ways to spend it. Option A and Option B are separate tabs so you can compare quickly, then switch whenever the weather or the kids' energy turns.

Day 1

Sat Dec 19 · Beijing · Science, robots & Olympic winter magic

Both Beijing days fall on a weekend, so every major museum is open (Monday closures do not apply). Expect crowds; book timed-entry tickets ahead. Beijing in late December hovers near 0 to −8°C with occasional light snow, so all indoor stops are heated. source

Day 2

Sun Dec 20 · Beijing · Imperial winter icons + culture

Another open day for the big museums. Off-season (Nov 1–Mar 31) ticket prices drop and crowds thin, making winter a photographer's dream at the palace and temple sites.

Option AForbidden City + Temple of Heaven + paper workshop
Morning

The world's largest imperial palace complex. Winter off-season means fewer crowds and, when it snows, snow-dusted golden roofs. Highlights include the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the rammed-earth and the gardens.

The reliable December evening highlight, free and lit roughly 17:00–22:00. Alternatively spend it on Day 1's night instead.
Option BScience Center + hutongs + art workshop
Morning

Beijing Science Center 北京科学中心

The old China Science and Technology Museum at Anhua Bridge, repurposed as a large, free, highly interactive science venue: a three-floor "Three Lives" main hall plus a dedicated children's discovery garden with slides, mazes and water physics, like San Francisco's Exploratorium. The "Chuang" space offers 129 interactive exhibits for older kids. The kids' park needs a reservation (1,000 slots a day, 500 per session).

Cafe break — Wudaoying Hutong cafes 雍和宫 / 五道营

A charming old-hutong cafe lane near Yonghe Lama Temple with several boutique courtyards open ~10:00 (Wolfing Coffee, Fu Ding Coffee with temple views at 雍和宫) — a cozy, photogenic winter warm-up.
Price: ~30–60 CNY pp.
Evening

Blue Harbor Light Festival or Houhai stroll

Finish at the light festival, or take a Houhai/Shichahai winter stroll — the natural rinks, if ice is safe, run roughly 8:00–17:00. Otherwise plan around the festival or Ice Ribbon, which are the guaranteed December bets.

Tokyo critical flags. The Odaiba 1:1 Unicorn Gundam statue was removed in Aug 2026, but the Gundam Base Tokyo store inside DiverCity stays open. Sony ExploraScience is permanently closed.
